Patrick Wales-Dinan: How I Talk to Recruits and Their Families About Finding the Right Fit
Over the years, I've sat across from a lot of high school runners and their parents, at kitchen tables, on campus visits, and over the phone during a season when nobody had much free time. As Patrick Wales-Dinan, I've found that recruiting conversations are a strange mix of exciting and stressful for a family, and I've learned that how a coach handles those conversations says a lot about what the actual experience will be like once the athlete arrives.
I don't think my job in those conversations is to sell a program as hard as possible. I think it's to help a family figure out honestly whether a program is right for their kid. Sometimes that answer is yes. Sometimes it isn't, and that's a useful thing to know before someone commits four years to a decision.
